Among the musicians who inspired Denzel Curry are DMX and Nirvana. New York’s hardcore rap had been crossing paths with rock and hardcore punk bands since the early 1990s, and in the 2010s a new set of rappers named both sides as their models.

オニクスの「Slam」は、ロックのライブでしか見られなかったスラムダンスを、ラップに持ち込んだ。手本は、MTV で繰り返し流れていたニルヴァーナ「Smells Like Teen Spirit」のビデオだった。ブルックリンのハードコア・バンド、バイオハザードの演奏で録り直した版も、同じ年に出る。DMX は「Party Up (Up in Here)」のヒットのあと、リンプ・ビズキットのツアーに加わり、最終日には彼らの曲を伴奏なしで一緒に歌った。
Onyx’s “Slam” brought slam dancing into rap, at a time when you only saw it in the crowd at rock shows. The model was Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video, which MTV was playing constantly. The same year, Onyx recut the song with Biohazard, a Brooklyn hardcore band, playing behind them. After the hit “Party Up (Up in Here)”, DMX joined Limp Bizkit’s tour, and on the last night he came out during their set to sing along to one of their songs a cappella.

OG Maco, born in College Park, Georgia, sang and played guitar in a band with friends and named Black Sabbath among his major influences. His 2014 single “U Guessed It” made his name, and his EP from the same year counts as an early record of what came to be called trap metal. City Morgue, a New York duo, came up on early singles like “33rd Blakk Glass” and “Sk8 Head”. They call their sound a modern take on nu metal with more 808s and hi-hats, and name DMX and Onyx as influences.

マイアミ・ガーデンズで育ったデンゼル・カリーは、SoundCloud から出たラップの先駆けの一人に数えられる。ロニー・J のビートに乗せた2015年の「Ultimate」は、翌年、Vine の動画で広まった。ハードコアのラップとハードコア・パンクを混ぜた2010年代のパンク・ラップでも、先頭に立った一人だ。2018年の「Vengeance」にはシティ・モルグのジラカミが加わり、翌年にはレイジ・アゲインスト・ザ・マシーン「Bulls on Parade」をラジオでカバーした。
Denzel Curry, who grew up in Miami Gardens, is credited with helping start SoundCloud rap. “Ultimate”, built on a Ronny J beat, came out in 2015 and spread through Vine videos the following year. He was also one of the leading figures of 2010s punk rap, which mixed hardcore hip-hop with hardcore punk. ZillaKami of City Morgue joined him on “Vengeance” in 2018, and the next year Curry covered Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade” on Australian radio.
