Cowbell and Low End
Cowbell and Low End
The first things you notice on a Memphis tape are a high, clanking cowbell and an 808 bass that sinks. Both come from the same drum machine.
Electro
The cowbell comes from Roland’s TR-808, which had a high, ringing cowbell alongside its dry handclap. In electro it was a flourish bouncing on top of a fast beat, as on Egyptian Lover’s “Egypt, Egypt” with its Middle Eastern melody. Electro built on the 808 is said to have started in New York, two years earlier, with Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force’s “Planet Rock”. On “Bass Machine”, which Kurtis Mantronik made with T La Rock, the 808 bass and triplet snares point ahead to both Miami bass and trap.
Miami Bass
Miami was where the TR-808’s long, trailing kick moved to the front. M.C. A.D.E.’s “Bass Rock Express” traveled overseas, and on 2 Live Crew’s “Throw the D” the floor-shaking bass sounds louder than any cowbell or handclap. The same holds for “I Wanna Rock”, released under the name Luke by Luther Campbell, the man at the center of the group. The tempo stays fast while the bass alone sinks.
Memphis Rap
DJ Spanish Fly played the 808 slow and heavy, and the cowbell went from a flourish to a sound repeated at the center of the track, as on “Gangsta Walk”, named after a Memphis dance. Passed from tape to tape, the sound grew muffled and cracked. On DJ Squeeky’s “Down South!!!”, rappers from outside Three 6 Mafia, among them Playa Fly and Al Kapone, take turns over it. Three 6 Mafia laid voices clipped into quick triplets over the slow beat, heard on “Who Run It” against a sparse backing.
