Darker Still

Memphis rappers inherited the storytelling of gangsta rap and pushed it darker with sounds that could have come from horror films.

Houston’s Geto Boys got to horror first. “Mind of a Lunatic” stretches gangsta rap, which told street violence from the inside, into the first person of a madman. On “We Can’t Be Stopped” two years later, “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” admits the fear under the bravado over an Isaac Hayes guitar, and “Chuckie”, from the same album, takes its title from the killer doll, with Bushwick Bill playing the part.

Memphis producers drew on horror-film scores and classical music as well as soul and funk. Formed in 1991, Three 6 Mafia pushed gangsta storytelling toward nightmare, with titles full of blood and guns, and on “Late Nite Tip”, from their early “Chapter 1: The End”, the members come in one after another in low voices. Some heard their early work as satanic, whatever the group intended, and “Tear da Club Up ’97” remade a track from their 1995 album “Mystic Stylez”. Gangsta Boo, the group’s only woman, kept rapping over DJ Paul and Juicy J’s beats on her first solo album, repeating the title line of “Where Dem Dollas At” like a chant.
