The Tapes, Dug Up
Given time, the Memphis sound reached the clubs of Atlanta, the trap of the 2010s and a young generation online.
Memphis Rap
Gangsta Boo of Three 6 Mafia repeats the title line again and again on “Where Dem Dollas At” from 1998. On Project Pat’s “Chickenhead”, he and La Chat trade barbed jokes, man against woman. Three 6 Mafia, at it since the tape days, landed their biggest hit in 2005 with “Stay Fly”, looping a Willie Hutch soul vocal, with 8Ball & MJG and Young Buck joining in.
クランクCrunk
The short phrase shouted over and over like a chant passed to Lil Jon in Atlanta, where crowds yell the hook together over slow, dark beats. Three 6 Mafia appear on his album “Put Yo Hood Up”, named after its title track, and “Get Crunk”, from “Crunk Juice”, takes its title straight from the genre. Crime Mob recorded “Knuck If You Buck” on a thousand-dollar advance, and it became a local hit in its unfinished form.
Trap
The flow that splits each beat into three and packs words into the gaps became known across America through Migos in the 2010s, on “Versace” some 20 years after the Memphis tapes. Lord Infamous of Three 6 Mafia is said to have used it first, and it could already be heard on Memphis tapes in the 1990s. Juicy J, from the same group, later scored a hit of his own on a trap beat with “Bandz a Make Her Dance”. Migos kept the same flow on “Bad and Boujee” with Lil Uzi Vert, a No. 1 in 2017.
Phonk
Young producers in Miami were the ones who dug the Memphis tapes back up. SpaceGhostPurrp cut up their voices and slow beats and called the result phonk, a name already in the title of the album that holds “Mystikal Maze”. Within about ten years the sound had become drift phonk, with a cowbell ringing fast and nonstop, and tracks by producers like Kordhell from the UK, such as “Murder In My Mind”, spread worldwide with car videos. In 2024 Denzel Curry, from the same collective as Purrp, brought Memphis veterans onto his own tape: Project Pat, Juicy J’s brother, on “SKED”, and Juicy J himself on “COLE PIMP”.
