Ice Cube Goes to New York

Ice Cube Goes to New York

Ice Cube has said that after leaving N.W.A he wanted Dr. Dre to make his first solo album. That never happened. He went instead to the Bomb Squad, the New York production team behind Public Enemy’s sound.

Funk

The producers Ice Cube worked with, on both coasts, drew on funk records. N.W.A’s “Express Yourself”, which Ice Cube wrote, is built on a 1970 song of the same name by Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, a Los Angeles group. On “Dopeman”, the high whine of the synth from the Ohio Players’ “Funky Worm” comes through. The Bomb Squad took the saxophone from “The Grunt” by the J.B.’s and used it like an alarm.

Golden Age

The Bomb Squad assembled tracks from fragments of records, stacking loop on top of loop. On Public Enemy’s “Welcome to the Terrordome”, pieces of James Brown records sit against a guitar line from the Temptations. Flavor Flav’s “911 Is a Joke” mocks the way emergency calls from Black neighborhoods go unanswered. Chuck D brought Ice Cube in for “Burn Hollywood Burn”, and that was how Ice Cube came to work with the Bomb Squad.

「Once Upon a Time in the Projects」も、そこで仕上げた一曲だ。 チャック・D が加わる「Endangered Species」では警察を責め、「It's a Man's World」ではヨーヨーと男女の悪口をぶつけ合う。

Ice Cube moved to New York with notebooks of lyrics he had been writing for Eazy-E, and “Once Upon a Time in the Projects” was one of the songs finished there. The title track takes off from the TV show “America’s Most Wanted” and mocks its glee at seeing Black men arrested. Chuck D joins him on “Endangered Species”, which goes after the police, and on “It’s a Man’s World” Ice Cube trades insults with Yo-Yo, man against woman.
