Where the Story Went
In the 1990s the same first-person storytelling moved onto sweet funk and into darker tales of horror. In the 2010s it turned up in videos made by Chicago teenagers.
Gangsta Rap
Ice Cube, MC Ren and Eazy-E come in one after another on N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” from 1988, each calling out his name. A year earlier, Eazy-E’s “Boyz-n-the-Hood” told a story Ice Cube had written, about a day of riding around and fighting. On “Fuck tha Police”, from the “Straight Outta Compton” album, the story becomes a courtroom sketch: Dr. Dre plays the judge, and the three take the stand to put the city’s police on trial.
G-Funk
After leaving N.W.A, Dr. Dre moved the same first-person storytelling onto slow, sweet funk. With no need to shout, the rapping drew closer to plain storytelling. A night at a party is described from inside it, in Snoop Doggy Dogg’s lazy voice, and when Warren G recounts trouble on the streets at night, Nate Dogg’s singing cuts in.
Horrorcore
A voice that speaks as someone on the scene can just as easily become the voice of a movie killer. Houston’s Geto Boys played narrators who lose their minds, and eventually acted out a killer doll from a horror film. Horrorcore is said to start there. Insane Clown Posse, a Detroit duo in clown makeup, turned this dark storytelling into a back-and-forth.
Drill
On Chicago’s South Side, 17-year-old Chief Keef sat under house arrest at his grandmother’s home, watching the videos for his songs spread on YouTube. The songs go through the friends and enemies on his block in a flat voice that gives nothing away. Lil Durk spoke in the same held-down voice over dark piano. Street stories told in the first person now reached the whole country through videos teenagers shot themselves, with no label involved.
