In the First Person
Gangsta rap speaks in the voice of someone on the scene, not someone asking questions from outside. That stance had forerunners: singers from before rap, and a few rappers on the East Coast.

Before rap, there were singers who described street life from the inside. For “Superfly”, the 1972 film with a dealer as its hero, Curtis Mayfield wrote songs that looked hard at the dead end of the dealer’s life, against the grain of the film. In title songs for other films of the time, Marvin Gaye sings the bitter days of his hero and Bobby Womack sings of life on the far side of a Harlem street, neither of them raising his voice. Iceberg Slim’s novels about a pimp’s life, where Ice-T later found his name, come from the same era.
East Coast
The record usually named as the first gangsta rap is one that Schoolly D of Philadelphia put out himself, with nothing on it but a drum machine and deep reverb. Two years later Boogie Down Productions from the South Bronx told stories of guns and crime in the first person. Their album “Criminal Minded” was also the first major hip-hop release with the members holding guns on the cover. On “P Is Free” they tell of meeting a woman who sells herself to feed a drug habit.

With Eazy-E and N.W.A in Compton, the first-person story got specific about who did what, and where. Scenes move like a film script, and even the dealer in “Dopeman” is made neither hero nor villain. In 1991 Scarface of Houston’s Geto Boys went further, writing “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” out of his own experience of mental illness.
