Jermaine Dupri’s Atlanta
Jermaine Dupri's Atlanta
In 1990, at Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta, 18-year-old Jermaine Dupri noticed two boys who said they had been friends since first grade. They weren’t rapping, and they didn’t play any instrument.

The two boys Jermaine Dupri spotted at the mall became Kris Kross, the first act on his label So So Def. For the 13-year-olds, who wore their clothes backwards, Dupri made songs built to shake the floor at any party, and “Jump” sat at No. 1 for eight weeks. From then on he kept making rap to get people dancing. The same idea runs through his work with the rapper Da Brat and through So So Def’s bass compilation, which carried Ghost Town DJ’s.

Dupri met Dem Franchize Boyz at a car show in Dallas. In 2005 he remixed the group’s “I Think They Like Me”, signed the four of them to So So Def and sent the track to No. 1 on the R&B chart. That is how the sparse beat of west Atlanta, little more than finger snaps and bass, got out of the city, with D4L’s “Laffy Taffy” close behind. Accounts differ on who started snap, but when people name the man who took it into the mainstream, Dupri comes first.
