How to Do the Soulja Boy

How to Do the Soulja Boy

In February 2007 Soulja Boy posted “Crank That” to MySpace along with a how-to for the dance: bounce back on your heels, ripple your hands, crank your wrists like a motorcyclist, then lunge into a Superman pose. Songs that tell a crowd how to dance had been part of Southern clubs long before that.

Miami Bass

「Whoot, there it is」は、マイアミとアトランタのクラブで踊る客の決まり文句だった。 (There It Is)」を出す。

“Whoot, there it is” was a stock phrase among dancers in the clubs of Miami and Atlanta. In 1993 Miami’s 95 South made a song of it, and a month later Atlanta’s Tag Team released “Whoomp! (There It Is)”. One of the duo was a DJ at Magic City in Atlanta and played the track there the same day it was mixed. Jay Ski of 95 South also helped put together 69 Boyz, whose “Tootsee Roll” turns dance instructions into the lyrics.

Bounce

DJ ジュビリーは、「Stop Pause, Do the Jubilee All」のような地元のヒットで、踊りや「twerk」のような言葉を広めたとされる。「Get Ready, Ready!」

In New Orleans bounce, the MC shouts out the dances and the crowd does them. DJ Jubilee is credited with spreading bounce dances and words like “twerk” through local hits such as “Stop Pause, Do the Jubilee All”, and on “Get Ready, Ready!” he runs through dance names one after another. Cheeky Blakk started out at 14 as a dancer for Ju’C, one of the first women in bounce, and on “Lef Cheek Rite Cheek” the title alone calls out the body parts.

Unk’s “Walk It Out” was on Atlanta radio from March 2006 and caught on nationally that September. Huey’s “Pop, Lock & Drop It”, out of St. Louis, spread along with its signature squatting move. Soulja Boy, who grew up in Mississippi, took his cue from the dance crazes that had made Atlanta rappers famous and worked out the “Crank That” moves with his friends. Unk shows up in the “Crank That” video doing the dance.
