Crunk, Stripped Down
In 2006 Lil Jon, the man behind crunk, put out a song on a finger-snapping beat, and it climbed to No. 7 in the US. Within a few years, the sound of Atlanta’s clubs had moved from a pack of shouting voices to the snap of fingers.
クランクCrunk
Lil Jon’s crunk was the loudest thing in Atlanta’s clubs around 2000. It stacked thick synths at a volume close to distortion and egged on a shouting crowd, as on “Get Low”. He also produced “Freek-a-Leek” for Petey Pablo of North Carolina, its shrill synth line lodging in the ear. On the Ying Yang Twins’ “Salt Shaker”, whispers and shouts trade places over his beat.
Snap
Snap beats are what remains when most of the sounds are pulled out of crunk’s racket. The thick synths are gone, and in the songs of Dem Franchize Boyz little is left but the 808 bass, the hi-hats and the snap of fingers. D4L’s “Laffy Taffy” reached No. 1 in the US with that sparse sound in January 2006. On Lil Jon’s “Snap Yo Fingers”, E-40 and the others rap over the same snap.
