In the 2010s, the sound of G-funk comes through strongly on West Coast albums by Kendrick Lamar, YG and Nipsey Hussle. One of them, “To Pimp a Butterfly”, had G-funk’s own Dr. Dre as executive producer.

Kendrick Lamar opened “To Pimp a Butterfly” in 2015 with “Wesley’s Theory”, bringing in Parliament’s George Clinton along with Thundercat; he is said to have listened to a lot of Parliament-Funkadelic while recording. “King Kunta” bounces on a fat bass and quotes a line from James Brown’s “The Payback”. Terrace Martin, a co-producer on the album, also made “Twist My Fingaz”, the first single from “Still Brazy” (2016) by YG, another Compton rapper. In 2018 Nipsey Hussle, after 13 years of mixtapes, released his only solo album, “Victory Lap”, which is also counted among records with a strong G-funk feel.
