Synths and Talk Boxes
Dr. Dre and his peers took the 1970s funk and soul that had played in their homes when they were kids and remade it as hip-hop beats. They slowed it down, kept the sweetness and set the words of gangsta rap on top.
Soul
The sweetness in G-funk comes from slow soul records. Leon Haywood on “I Want’a Do Something Freaky to You” and the Isley Brothers on “Footsteps in the Dark” kept the tempo down and let keys and guitar ring softly. West Coast producers added white soft rock to the pile as well, like Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)”, whose clean, prominent bass line comes from Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson.
Funk
G-funk gives itself away within seconds through its synth, high as a whistle. Trace that sound back and you reach the shrill ARP solo Junie Morrison played on the Ohio Players’ “Funky Worm”, which West Coast producers chased again and again nearly 20 years later. Parliament played even the bass on synthesizer, with Bernie Worrell layering Minimoogs on “Flash Light”, and the “Swing down, sweet chariot” line from “Mothership Connection (Star Child)” became the hook of “Let Me Ride”. Roger Troutman of Zapp used a talk box to turn his voice itself into a synth, as on the group’s first single, “More Bounce to the Ounce”.
G-Funk
Dr. Dre never sped up the funk and soul he built on. He let sweet loops run as long phrases and layered replayed fat bass and high synths over them, and the gangsta lyrics on top come without any hurry. “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” rests on a Leon Haywood record Dre found at his mother’s house, and “Let Me Ride”, with its Parliament hook, won him a Grammy. The Isley Brothers’ guitar keeps turning under “It Was a Good Day”, where Ice Cube counts a day without incident as good luck, and Warren G pulled the record behind “Regulate” from a stack he bought on the street.
