Tigers Jaw grew out of 2000s emo. The band took its name from a song by the lo-fi band the Microphones, and its members named Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance as their first influences. Even after he crossed over to rap on his own, McIlwee held on to that emo way of singing.

Outside Tigers Jaw, Adam McIlwee started a solo project as Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, mixing hip-hop, emo and witch house. On Tumblr he gathered friends who wanted to connect emo, trap, dark wave and black metal, and that circle became GothBoiClique. In 2014 the group came under an offshoot of SpaceGhostPurrp’s Raider Klan, which tied it to the online rap world.

Growing up on Long Island, the teenage Lil Peep made most of his friends online. He looked up to the cloud rap crews around Bones, and to iLoveMakonnen. In 2016 he moved to Los Angeles, and that fall he joined GothBoiClique, bringing emo guitar and online rap together in one voice.
