フロリダ州ブロワード郡で育った XXX テンタシオンとスキー・マスク・ザ・スランプ・ゴッドは、どちらもジャマイカ系で、二人でメンバーズ・オンリーという集まりを作った。2013年、テンタシオンがブルー・スノーボールのマイクを買って録り始め、スキー・マスクもそれに続いた。
XXXTentacion and Ski Mask the Slump God grew up in Broward County, Florida, both of Jamaican descent, and together they started a collective called Members Only. In 2013 XXXTentacion bought a Blue Snowball microphone and began recording, and Ski Mask soon did the same.

バスタ・ライムスは、ジャマイカから来た両親のもとブルックリンで生まれ、ア・トライブ・コールド・クエストの「Scenario」で名を上げた。初めてのソロ・シングル「Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check」では、家で聴いて育ったダンスホールの DJ の語りの調子をラップに移した。ビッグ・ダディ・ケインは、バスタの乗せ方をヒップホップでいちばんだと言い、その例に「Turn It Up」の元の版を挙げている。スキー・マスクは、このバスタを聴いて育った。
Busta Rhymes was born in Brooklyn to parents who had come from Jamaica, and he first got wide notice on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario”. On his first solo single, “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check”, he carried the cadence of the dancehall toasters he grew up hearing at home into his rapping. When Big Daddy Kane called Busta’s flow the best in hip-hop, it was the original “Turn It Up” he had in mind. Ski Mask grew up listening to Busta.

スキー・マスクがいちばん好きなプロデューサーに挙げたのは、ヴァージニアのティンバランドだ。初めて大きく手がけたのは1996年のジニュワインのデビュー作で、「Pony」がヒットする。同じ年、幼なじみのミッシー・エリオットと組み、アリーヤの『One In A Million』で、表題曲や「If Your Girl Only Knew」など9曲を書いて作った。ヒップホップの速く切れのいいドラムと、つっかえるようなリズムを R&B に持ち込んだ。
Ski Mask has named Timbaland, from Virginia, as his favorite producer. Timbaland’s first major credit was Ginuwine’s 1996 debut, which gave him a hit in “Pony”. The same year he and his childhood friend Missy Elliott wrote and produced nine songs on Aaliyah’s “One In A Million”, including the title track and “If Your Girl Only Knew”. He brought hip-hop’s fast, crisp drums and a stuttering rhythm into R&B.

ロンドン南部のダブステップは、1分間に140拍前後で、太いサブベースが曲を引っぱる。クロイドンのレコード店にいたスクリームの「Midnight Request Line」は、ジャンルの外でもヒットした。マーラとコーキのデジタル・ミスティックズはレゲエとダブを持ち込み、2007年の夏、コーキとベンガの「Night」がほかのジャンルの DJ にも回された。同じ年のマーラの「Changes」は、のちに「Look at Me!」の下敷きになる。
South London dubstep runs at around 140 beats per minute, with a heavy sub-bass pulling the track along. Skream, who worked at a record shop in Croydon, had a crossover hit with “Midnight Request Line”. Mala and Coki of Digital Mystikz brought reggae and dub into the sound, and in the summer of 2007 “Night”, Coki’s track with Benga, was being played by DJs from other genres. Mala’s “Changes”, from the same year, later became the base of “Look at Me!”.

「Look at Me!」は、2015年の暮れに、共同プロデューサーのロハスの SoundCloud に上がった。ロハスが最後に聴かせたビートに XXX テンタシオンが飛びつき、15分で録って、曲全体をわざと割れさせた。1分間に139拍で、ダブステップとほぼ同じ速さだ。スキー・マスクは2016年のテープでテンタシオンと「Take A Step Back」を録り、2017年の「BabyWipe」も、まず SoundCloud に上げた。
“Look at Me!” went up at the end of 2015 on the SoundCloud page of its co-producer, Rojas. XXXTentacion jumped on the last beat Rojas played him, finished the song in 15 minutes and chose to distort the whole track. It runs at 139 beats per minute, almost the same speed as dubstep. Ski Mask recorded “Take A Step Back” with XXXTentacion on a 2016 mixtape, and in 2017 his “BabyWipe” also went up on SoundCloud before anywhere else.
