Houston, Heard in Harlem
Houston, Heard in Harlem
Growing up in Harlem, A$AP Rocky didn’t only listen to New York rap. He listened to the slow, low, sweet Southern rap of Houston, Texas.
Southern Hip-Hop
Among the names A$AP Rocky grew up on were the Geto Boys from Houston and UGK from Port Arthur, also in Texas, and their slow, low voices would later sit at the core of his sound. On “Mind Playing Tricks on Me”, the Geto Boys describe the visions of sleepless nights over an Isaac Hayes guitar. Pimp C’s voice stretches out on UGK’s “Pocket Full of Stones”, and “Int’l Players Anthem”, with OutKast, was a big hit in the year Pimp C died.
Chopped and Screwed
Mike Jones, Paul Wall and Slim Thug, who came out of Swishahouse, are the artists A$AP Rocky names as models. In 2000s Houston, the DJ Screw way of hearing a record, with voices slowed, lowered and stretched, was turning straight into hits, music made for cars that roll along leaning to one side. Mike Jones’ debut single “Still Tippin’” brings in Slim Thug and Paul Wall, and Wall’s “Sittin’ Sidewayz” borrows a Big Pokey line from a DJ Screw tape.
Cloud Rap
Love.
On the first track of his 2011 debut mixtape “Live. Love. A$AP”, Rocky raps that he is influenced by Houston and that you can hear it in his music. The hook comes in a slowed, lowered voice, and the tempo stays on DJ Screw’s side. The purple in “Purple Swag” is the color of a Houston drink, and its remix brings in Houston’s own Bun B and Paul Wall.
