Ike’s Rap
Ike's Rap
Jazz and soul records had talk set to rhythm on them years before the Bronx parties began. Rhyming in time with the beat of the record that’s playing is credited to a DJ from Harlem.
Jazz
On “New York, N.Y.”, the album George Russell’s orchestra released in 1959, the singer Jon Hendricks links some of the performances with narration. All of it rhymes, and he delivers it in a hip, rhythm-conscious way, something close to rap on a jazz record more than a decade before the Bronx parties. The album opens with Rodgers and Hart’s “Manhattan”, followed by two pieces Russell wrote himself, “Big City Blues” and “Manhattan-Rico”, each running past ten minutes.
Soul
「By the Time I Get To Phoenix」は18分40秒のうち最初の8分が語りで、「I Stand Accused」も語りから始まる。
On Isaac Hayes’ records, a long spoken passage in his low, husky voice often comes before the singing. His “By the Time I Get To Phoenix” runs 18 minutes 40 seconds, and the first eight are talk, while “I Stand Accused” also opens with a monologue. In 1970 he titled one of these passages “Ike’s Rap”, and a slang word for talking became the name for talk on a record. The words of “Good Love 6-9-9-6-9” later turned up in DJ Hollywood’s rhymes.
Old School
The first rhymes Kurtis Blow ever heard came from DJ Hollywood of Harlem. In 1975 Hollywood rhymed in time with the beat of a record for nearly a minute without stopping. Before that, MCs worked in short, unconnected bits of patter modeled on radio DJs. His partner Lovebug Starski took the style to the Bronx and went on to record “Dancin’ Party People” and “Positive Life”. With “Christmas Rappin’”, Kurtis Blow became the first rapper signed to a major label.
