DJ スクリューを音楽に引き寄せたのは、1984年の映画『Breakin'』と、母親のターンテーブルだった。ピアノを習い、居間にはドラムもあったが、どちらにも気が乗らなかった。「スクリュー」の名は、気に入らないレコードをねじで傷つけるのを、友だちにからかわれて付いた。
What drew DJ Screw to music was the 1984 film “Breakin’” and his mother’s turntable. He had taken piano lessons and had drums in the living room, but neither held his interest. The name came from a friend’s teasing, because he gouged records he didn’t like with a screw.

DJ スクリューは子どものころ、母親の B.B. キングやジョニー・テイラーのレコードをターンテーブルでこすり、回る盤を遅くしては速さを戻した。テイラーはメンフィスのスタックスで「ソウルの哲学者」と呼ばれ、「Who's Making Love」と「Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone」を R&B の1位にした。コロンビアに移って出した「Disco Lady」は、アメリカで初めてプラチナに認定されたシングルだ。
As a boy, DJ Screw took his mother’s B.B. King and Johnnie Taylor records and scratched them on the turntable, slowing the spinning disc and then letting it speed back up. At Stax in Memphis, Taylor was billed as “The Philosopher of Soul” and took “Who’s Making Love” and “Jody’s Got Your Girl and Gone” to No. 1 on the R&B chart. After moving to Columbia, he released “Disco Lady”, the first single ever certified platinum.

DJ スクリューの遅いミックスは、1990年、友だちに頼まれて一本ずつ作るものとして始まった。友人のトーが10ドルで買うと言い出して、売り物になる。やがてスクリューは街の南側のラッパーを招き、その上でラップさせた。ルイジアナから10代で移ってきた E.S.G. もその一人で、リル・フリップはスクリュー本人に「フリースタイルの王」と呼ばれた。ボタニー・ボーイズの名前は、クローヴァーランド地区のボタニー・レーンから来ている。
DJ Screw’s slowed-down mixes began in 1990 as tapes he made one at a time for friends who asked. When his friend Toe offered ten dollars for one, the tapes became something to sell. Screw then invited rappers from Houston’s south side to rhyme over the mixes, among them E.S.G., who had moved from Louisiana in his mid-teens, and Lil’ Flip, whom Screw himself called “The Freestyle King”. The Botany Boyz took their name from Botany Lane in the Cloverland area.
