DJ Screw died in 2000. His slowness moved beyond the tapes and into the music of very different cities and generations.

Fat Pat was one of the rappers who freestyled on Screw’s tapes. He was shot and killed in 1998, and “Tops Drop” appeared on the album released after his death. Lil’ Keke, who also came up on the tapes, had made his name beyond Houston the year before with “Southside”. The following year, Lil’ Troy’s “Wanna Be a Baller” used a verse Fat Pat recorded while he was alive, and in the video his brother Big Hawk stood in for him.

Houston’s sound was made for cars cruising slowly, and Chicago’s Kanye West brought that feeling, along with Houston’s Paul Wall, onto his own album with “Drive Slow”. The same song went onto Paul Wall’s “The Peoples Champ”, which entered the chart at No. 1, and its limited edition came with an extra disc of slowed versions. On that album, “They Don’t Know” quotes Screw’s “Pimp tha Pen”, and “Girl” borrows the Chi-Lites’ “Oh Girl”.

DJ Screw’s slowness crossed the border into Canada. On “November 18th”, from a 2009 mixtape, Toronto’s Drake laid slowed-down songs under his own, among them a slowed “Da Streets Ain’t Right” and Lil’ Keke’s “Pimp tha Pen” from Screw’s tapes. Travis Scott, who grew up in Houston, put a song called “R.I.P. SCREW” on his 2018 album named after a local amusement park. “SICKO MODE”, from the same record, carries Drake and the voice of the late Big Hawk, and went to No. 1.

Harlem’s A$AP Rocky modeled his sound on Screw’s slow, low voices. On “Purple Swag” in 2011 he pitches his own voice down and raps slowly over hazy synths, and its video caught a label’s attention. “Peso” was on New York radio within weeks of leaking online, and the “Purple Swag” remix brings in Houston’s Bun B and Paul Wall.

Phonk

Miami’s SpaceGhostPurrp used Screw’s method of dropping the tempo to turn voices from Memphis tapes into something dark and hazy, and put the name of the sound in the title of “Bringing the Phonk”. “Mystikal Maze” comes from an album called “Mysterious Phonk”. This was the slow, sunken phonk that came before the fast, aggressive drift phonk, and Freddie Dredd’s “Cha Cha” holds on to that dark, slow form.
