The Same Song, Slowed
Most of what went onto DJ Screw’s tapes were songs people already knew. Hear one at its original speed and then Screw’s version, and the same song is moving through a completely different stretch of time.
Southern Hip-Hop
UGK, from Port Arthur, Texas, set Southern life over slow, heavy beats, with Pimp C’s stretched-out voice beside Bun B’s weighty delivery. “Pocket Full of Stones” comes from their first major-label album and turned up in a film the next year, and the album “Ridin’ Dirty”, named after its title track, became their best seller without a single or a video. It was unhurried music to begin with, and the two also appear on DJ Screw’s tapes. Houston’s Paul Wall took a line Big Pokey said on Screw’s “June 27th” and made it the hook of “Sittin’ Sidewayz”.
Memphis Rap
DJ Screw’s tapes in Houston took in songs from outside the city. “Space Age Pimpin’” by the Memphis duo 8Ball & MJG is a sweet track, the two taking their time over soft synths, heard here at its original speed. Memphis had its own culture of homemade tapes sold by hand: DJ Spanish Fly sold tapes of slow 808 beats at a club window and named “Gangsta Walk” after a local dance. 8Ball & MJG later joined Three 6 Mafia on “Stay Fly”, the biggest hit for both groups.
Chopped and Screwed
On Screw’s version of “Space Age Pimpin’”, the sweet synths are drawn out, the voices sink low and a phrase keeps coming back. Local rappers kept freestyling over the tapes at that slow pace, Lil’ Keke without a break on “Pimp tha Pen”. In time it became a Houston habit to release a second, slowed version alongside an album. Mike Jones’ first single, “Still Tippin’”, and Paul Wall’s own “Sittin’ Sidewayz” both play here in their slowed versions.
