Slick Rick's B-Side
In 1985 Doug E. Fresh released “The Show”, and on the B-side Slick Rick rapped “La Di Da Di”. The B-side outgrew the A-side, and later generations of rappers kept borrowing its lines.

の掛け声は、ビースティ・ボーイズ「Hold It Now, Hit It」にも、ロブ・ベース & DJ E-Z ロック「It Takes Two」にも聞こえる。
The only accompaniment on “La Di Da Di” is Doug E. Fresh’s beatbox. Over it, Slick Rick tells of a day when he steps out of the house and gets cornered by a girl and then by her mother, in a voice that keeps the British pronunciations of his London childhood. The “Hit it!” shout from the intro also turns up on the Beastie Boys’ “Hold It Now, Hit It” and on Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock’s “It Takes Two”.
Gangsta Rap
N.W.A の「Gangsta Gangsta」は、「La Di Da Di」の出だしを「Hit it!」
N.W.A’s “Gangsta Gangsta” lifts the opening of “La Di Da Di”, right up to the “Hit it!”. Ice Cube, who raps most of its verses, kept borrowing from Slick Rick after that. He put a line into the hook of “Look Who’s Burnin’” in 1991, and on “Stop Snitchin’” in 2006 he turned “your words just hypnotize me” into “your words incarcerate me”.
G-Funk
On “Doggystyle”, his 1993 debut album, Snoop Doggy Dogg covered “La Di Da Di” as “Lodi Dodi”, with Death Row’s G-funk in place of the beatbox. It was never an official single, but it got radio play, and an 18-minute video was shot for it together with “Murder Was the Case”. Three years later the hook of “Sixx Minutes” borrowed words from “The Show”.
Jazz Rap
生のバンドで鳴らす「Mellow My Man」では、ブラック・ソートが自分を「Slick Rick the Ruler」にたとえる。 Q ティップを迎えたブラック・シープ「La Menage」は「on and on she kept on」を使い、ア・トライブ・コールド・クエストは1998年の「The Love」でこの曲を切り取った。
Questlove, the Roots’ drummer, has called Slick Rick “the blueprint”. On “Mellow My Man”, played by the Roots as a live band, Black Thought compares himself to “Slick Rick the Ruler”. The Native Tongues crews cut out single phrases instead. Black Sheep’s “La Menage”, with Q-Tip, carries “on and on she kept on”, and A Tribe Called Quest sampled the song on “The Love”.

デ・ラ・ソウルは1991年の『De La Soul Is Dead』で、「La Di Da Di」の「I can't be your lover」を、「Kicked Out the House」など何曲にもまたがる持ちネタにした。
On “De La Soul Is Dead” in 1991, De La Soul turned “I can’t be your lover” from “La Di Da Di” into a running gag across several tracks, “Kicked Out the House” among them. More than twenty years later, on “Oldie” by the Los Angeles collective Odd Future, Earl Sweatshirt drops a “La di da di”. Tyler, the Creator uses the same words on “Deathcamp” in 2015.
