When samplers spread in the late 1980s, producers began stacking pieces of many records into one track. Any part of any record on the shelf could go in, as much of it as they liked.
ファンクFunk
重ねられた音の中心にあったのは、ジェームス・ブラウンの周りのファンクだった。J.B.'s の甲高いサックスや「Funky Drummer」のドラムは、数秒切り出すだけでループになる。エリック・B & ラキムは、ボビー・バードの曲をドラムと掛け声ごと借り、ソウル・サーチャーズのループを「Paid in Full」の下で回した。プロデューサーたちは、そうした断片を一曲に何層も重ねていった。
At the center of golden-age sample layering was the funk around James Brown. The shrill saxophone of the J.B.’s on “The Grunt” and the drums of “Funky Drummer”, eight bars Clyde Stubblefield plays alone near the end, turn into loops once a few seconds are cut out. Eric B. & Rakim borrowed Bobby Byrd’s “I Know You Got Soul” with its drums, shouts and title, and ran the Soul Searchers’ “Ashley’s Roachclip” loop under “Paid in Full”. Producers stacked fragments like these several layers deep in a single track.

Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad and the Dust Brothers, who worked with the Beastie Boys, layered fragments of dozens of records into a single track until the sound came at you like a wall, as on “Rebel Without a Pause” and “Shake Your Rump” from “Paul’s Boutique”. Listening alone, you can’t tell what came from where. That was only possible in the few years when samples could be used without permission. “Funky Drummer” runs under “Fight the Power”, and it is still there on LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” in 1990. When Biz Markie lost his case in 1991, the practice of playing whole record shelves began to wind down.
