Stretching the Kick
Stretching the Kick
Turn a knob on the Roland TR-808 and its kick drum rings out with a long tail. In mid-1980s Miami, that tail became the star of the music.
Electro
New York electro used the 808’s dry handclaps and cowbell to drive fast beats for breakdancing. Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” replayed Kraftwerk on the 808, and “Jam on It” by Brooklyn’s Newcleus became a dance-floor staple. In Los Angeles, Egyptian Lover was one of the first to use the same machine for rap, on “Egypt, Egypt” from his first album. The fast tempo and machine rhythm carried straight on to Miami, but the kick was still short, a thump that stopped dead.
Miami Bass
In Miami the 808 kick got longer: instead of ending on the hit, it trails off and sinks low. M.C. A.D.E.’s underground hit “Bass Rock Express” spread as far as overseas, and 2 Live Crew, who had moved from California, set the template with “Throw the D”. The tempo stays fast, with short chants on top for the crowd to shout back. On “Me So Horny” the hook is a line from “Full Metal Jacket”, and the lyrics ended up in court.
