Where Southern Bass Began
Where Southern Bass Began
Miami’s bass spread beyond Florida through tapes and clubs. In each city that picked it up, it became the base of a different music.
Miami Bass
On Afro-Rican’s “Give It All You Got”, the 808 bass never lets up and the same chant comes around again and again. Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew, recording solo as Luke, moved crowds on “I Wanna Rock” with the chant “Doo doo brown”. On 69 Boyz’ “Tootsee Roll”, chanted dance instructions became the whole song, and it sold a million copies.
Bounce
MC が「Where dey at?」
New Orleans bounce kept the fast tempo and 808 bass of Miami bass and put local chants on top. When the MC calls out “Where dey at?” and shouts the names of neighborhoods and housing projects, the crowd from each one shouts back. Partners-N-Crime’s “Pump Tha Party” and DJ Jubilee’s “Get Ready, Ready!” were made to move people at local parties. Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” brought Mannie Fresh’s fast hi-hats to a wide audience.
Memphis Rap
Memphis slowed Miami’s speed right down. On DJ Spanish Fly’s tapes, such as “Gangsta Walk”, a voice talks over a slow, heavy 808, and only the bass remains, as a dark, muffled floor under everything. Over that bass, Three 6 Mafia got the crowd shouting on “Tear da Club Up ’97”, a song some clubs banned because people started wrecking the place, and on “Who Run It” they packed rapid words in triplets into a sparse beat.
クランクCrunk
Atlanta’s crunk took the long 808 and shouted hooks of Miami bass and made them slower and heavier. Hooks were cut down to a few words the crowd could yell together. Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz broke nationally with the call-and-response of “Get Low”, and in 2004 they released “Get Crunk”, named after the genre itself. Crime Mob’s “Knuck If You Buck” became a local hit in its unfinished form.
