Master P Comes Home

Master P Comes Home

Master P grew up in the Calliope Projects of New Orleans, started a label in the San Francisco Bay Area, and later brought it home. While he was in the Bay in the early 1990s, the rap that ruled New Orleans was bounce, which had come out of the city’s housing projects.

When Master P was opening for Tupac in the early 1990s, the people introducing him would often call him “Mr. P the country singer”. He had transferred to a college in Oakland, and with the $10,000 he received after his grandfather’s death, he opened a record store in Richmond, California. A few years earlier, elsewhere in the Bay, Too Short had sold his own albums out of the trunk of his car. One of the first rappers the store’s label signed was Dangerous Dame from Oakland.

In 1995 Master P moved No Limit from California back to his hometown of New Orleans, and the next year he released “Ice Cream Man”. Back in 1995, Mystikal’s album on Jive had turned the music industry’s attention to the city without using any bounce at all, and he later moved to No Limit too. Mia X was working at Peaches Records when Master P came in asking about promising local female rappers.

Bounce

DJ Jubilee of the St. Thomas Projects put out his records on Take Fo’, the first label devoted to bounce, and got crowds moving with “twerk baby”. As No Limit sold across the country it drifted away from bounce, yet “Wobble Wobble” by Master P’s new group, the 504 Boyz, grew out of a Jubilee lyric. Choppa, another Take Fo’ artist, had a local hit with “Choppa Style” in 2001 and put out his next album on No Limit.
