Where the Triggerman Went
Where the Triggerman Went
Like Miami bass and crunk, bounce was dance music rooted in one region. From the 2000s on, though, its beat and its voices worked their way into rap from other cities and into national hits.

Mannie Fresh, the producer behind nearly all of Cash Money’s records, made the beat that takes over from the strings on Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up”. In 2004 he released “Real Big” in his own voice, a loose, easy rap over bouncing programmed drums, and it made the national chart. On Big Freedia’s local hit “Gin in My System”, a heavy voice repeats the same words over a faster Triggerman.

Memphis’ DJ Spanish Fly was playing the Triggerman in the South before New Orleans was, spreading it along with the gangsta walk, a dance then popular in town and the title of his “Gangsta Walk”. Mississippi’s David Banner built “Like a Pimp”, with Houston’s Lil’ Flip, on a slowed, dragging Triggerman, and layered a line from UGK’s “Take It Off” with “Drag Rap” in the hook. In Atlanta, the Ying Yang Twins took a bounce chant for the hook of “Salt Shaker”.
R&BR&B
Beyoncé has brought bounce into her music twice, 16 years apart. The first time, on “Get Me Bodied” from “B’Day”, she mixed it into R&B along with dancehall. The second, “BREAK MY SOUL”, set Big Freedia’s voice from “Explode” over a house beat and went to No. 1. Chris Brown has put “Drag Rap” itself under his songs several times, and he sings over it again on “Iffy” in 2022.

Toronto’s Drake did more than anyone to spread the Triggerman across America. In a single year he released two bounce songs carrying New Orleans voices, and both went to No. 1: “Nice For What” layers Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor” with “Drag Rap” and opens with Big Freedia, and “In My Feelings” features Magnolia Shorty. Atlanta’s T.I. brought in Lil Wayne from New Orleans to ride the beat on “Ball”, and Young Thug laid “Drag Rap” under “Go Crazy”, his song with Chris Brown.

「Back That Azz Up」の最後で叫んでいたリル・ウェインは、20年あまりのちのアルバム『Funeral』の「Clap For Em」で、「Drag Rap」を引いた。トロントのドレイクは「Practice」に、「Back That Azz Up」の一部を取り込んでいる。
Born in Queens and raised in New Orleans, the Triggerman came back to New York in 2025, when the Bronx’s Cardi B rode it on “Outside” to announce she was about to step out. Lil Wayne, whose shout closes “Back That Azz Up”, drew on “Drag Rap” more than 20 years later for “Clap For Em” on his album “Funeral”. Drake worked part of “Back That Azz Up” into “Practice”, from “Take Care”.
