The Forgotten Bars
The Forgotten Bars
For years, a duo from Queens had no idea their song was still playing across the South. The person who told them, the story goes, was Chuck D of Public Enemy.
Electro
The Showboys’ “Drag Rap” is a rap crime drama that borrows the sound and plot of the police show “Dragnet”. Underneath it run an 808 and short, high electronic blips, the same machine sound Brooklyn’s Mantronix used on “Bassline”, where even the bass line is played on electronic instruments. The long low end of “Bass Machine”, which Kurtis Mantronik made with T La Rock, later became part of the groundwork for Miami bass. Forgotten in New York, “Drag Rap” reached New Orleans when MC T. Tucker bought a copy on a trip and brought it home.
Golden Age
The Triggerman did not come only from “Drag Rap”. Cameron Paul, a Bay Area DJ, rebuilt the drums of “Rock the Beat” by Britain’s Derek B into a mixing tool called “Brown Beats”. Those drums are the eight bars of James Brown’s “Funky Drummer”, which Eric B. & Rakim used on “Eric B. Is President” and helped make sampling widespread. Public Enemy laid the same break under “Fight the Power”.
Miami Bass
(There It Is)」で、全米のヒットにまでなった。
Bounce’s speed and low end came from Florida. Miami’s 2 Live Crew shook Southern parties with the 808’s long bass and fast tempos on records like “Throw the D”, and after leaving the group, Luther Campbell put out “I Wanna Rock” as Luke. Short hooks for a crowd to shout went all the way to a national hit with the Atlanta duo Tag Team’s “Whoomp! (There It Is)”. New Orleans took on both the speed and the chants as they were.
Bounce
In 1991 MC T. Tucker and DJ Irv made the first bounce record on the Triggerman beat from “Drag Rap”. The whole city reused those bars, and MCs like DJ Jubilee shouted dance names and neighborhood names over them, as on “Get Ready, Ready!”. Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” rides the same bounce and closes with a shout from Lil Wayne. In the late 1990s came sissy bounce, a name its performers use themselves, centered on gay and transgender artists, and Big Freedia’s heavy voice rides the same beat on “Explode” from 2014.
