Off the Usual Shelf
Hip-hop at the end of the 1980s was built mostly on funk and soul drums from the world around James Brown. Three friends from Long Island and their producer, Prince Paul, reached past that shelf.
Soul
「(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay」の終わりで、オーティス・レディングは歌うのをやめて、口笛を吹く。
De La Soul went for the least noticeable moments in soul classics. At the end of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”, Otis Redding stops singing and whistles. “Eye Know” sets that whistle beside the guitar and horns of the Mad Lads from Memphis, over drums borrowed from a Lee Dorsey song.
Jazz
Bob Dorough’s song was written to teach multiplication on American television, and De La Soul built a whole track on it. In Los Angeles the Pharcyde told the sorry tale of a crush over Quincy Jones’ electric piano from the same year. Their “Passin’ Me By” also layers in Weather Report’s “125th Street Congress”, a track Joe Zawinul cut with a newly hired drummer to add a funk pulse to the band.
Rock / Metal
Steely Dan recorded “Peg” with top jazz players, and it is one of the most polished sounds in rock. On “Eye Know”, De La Soul put its guitar and backing vocals in the same song as Otis Redding’s whistling. They built “Say No Go” almost entirely on Hall & Oates’ “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)”. Using the Turtles’ “You Showed Me” without permission on a short interlude led to a lawsuit, settled out of court, and it is said to be the first time a hip-hop group was sued over how it used someone else’s song.
Alternative Hip-Hop
De La Soul’s “3 Feet High and Rising” from 1989 treats soul, a children’s TV song and Steely Dan as equals of a Hall & Oates hit, from “Eye Know” to “The Magic Number”. That range worked against the album: the clearances were never all secured, and the parts that could not be cleared had to be played again. Three years after it came out, the Pharcyde in Los Angeles layered Jimi Hendrix played backward over Quincy Jones’ piano on “Passin’ Me By”.
