Still Outside the Lines

By the mid-1990s, West Coast gangsta rap was where the sales were, and much of alternative hip-hop stepped out of view. The attitude lived on at independent labels and with a young generation on the internet.

De La Soul’s first hit, “Me Myself and I”, answers the “hippie” label others stuck on them by saying they are simply themselves. Over Funkadelic’s lightly bouncing synth in 1989, the three rap without putting on a front. Three years later in Atlanta, Arrested Development won a Grammy for “Tennessee”, in which a man who has lost his grandmother and his brother walks the land of his ancestors and talks to God. OutKast, also from Atlanta, ran “B.O.B.” in 2000 at 155 beats per minute.

At Stones Throw in California, Madlib decided for himself what to sample and where a track should end. “Madvillainy”, his album with MF DOOM as Madvillain, strings short tracks one after another and includes beats with no rap at all. Many of those beats were made on a trip to Brazil, in a hotel room in São Paulo, with nothing but a small sampler, a portable turntable and a cassette deck.

Lil B in the Bay Area rapped over beats that Clams Casino sent him online from New Jersey. A$AP Rocky lived in Harlem, in New York, but took Houston rap as his model, and on “Purple Swag” his voice is pitched down low.

Kid Cudi from Cleveland showed another way to rap in 2008: instead of boasting about strength, he half-sang about lying awake alone at night. The SoundCloud generation of the 2010s took it up. Lil Peep sang about loneliness over ringing guitar, and Juice WRLD sang about dreams of a girl who had left him.
