The 2001 film “Scratch” puts California’s DJ Shadow alongside DJ Qbert and other masters of the turntable. He appears at the decks and in front of the racks of a record store.

On “Invasion of the Octopus People”, from his 1998 album “Wave Twisters”, DJ Qbert scratches sci-fi voices and sound effects until they sound like different words. Montreal’s Kid Koala released “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome” in 2000, and on “Drunk Trumpet” he scratches a trumpet note so its pitch wobbles like the drunk of the title. “Fender Bender” shuffles short voice fragments into something like a joke.

DJ Shadow’s “Endtroducing.....” (1996) is built almost entirely from sounds lifted off records, with little more than an MPC60 sampler, turntables and a recorder. He spent hours a day in a Sacramento record store and cut up the used funk, rock and jazz records he found there. A Storch piano loop runs against a drummer’s interview on “Building Steam with a Grain of Salt”, and strings pile onto tumbling drums on “Stem / Long Stem (Medley)”. In 2001 Guinness World Records listed it as the first album made entirely from samples.
