Flash’s Three Turntables

Flash's Three Turntables

In 1981 Grandmaster Flash went into the studio during a four-day break from touring and mixed about ten records live on three turntables. Whenever he slipped he went back to the beginning, and after 10 to 15 takes he had “Wheels of Steel”, just over seven minutes long. This episode starts with the records that were on those turntables.

Among the records Grandmaster Flash cut together on “Wheels of Steel” were Chic’s “Good Times” and two hits that took their cue from it. Queen’s John Deacon had spent time at Chic’s studio, and Bernard Edwards’ bouncing bass gave him the idea for “Another One Bites the Dust”. On Blondie’s “Rapture”, Debbie Harry, who had been to rap parties in the Bronx, raps over Chic-style disco and name-checks him: “Flash is fast, Flash is cool.”

The first rap records on Sugar Hill were cut over a studio band. On the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” the band replays the bass of “Good Times”, and “8th Wonder” is rapped over “Daisy Lady”, a disco record. Flash himself is not on “The Message”, though it came out under his group’s name. On stage his turntables were at the center of the sound, but records built on a session band’s groove left them almost no room.

Two years after “Wheels of Steel”, Double Dee and Steinski won a remix contest with “Lesson 1”, a collage whose sources included Flash’s record. Other DJs kept the numbering going. Cut Chemist made “Lesson 4: The Radio” in 1993, and in 1997 he put “Lesson 6: The Lecture” on an EP by his group Jurassic 5. On “The Audience Is Listening Theme Song”, from his 2006 solo album, fragments of narration from old records play against chopped-up drums.
