Southern producers usually dug through the shelf closest to home. That meant Memphis soul and the soundtracks of 1970s blaxploitation films.

At Stax in Memphis, Isaac Hayes made long, slow-burning soul, and “Hung Up on My Baby”, written for a film, rests on a quiet guitar. Willie Hutch’s sweet voice ran through the film music of the same years, on “I Choose You” from “The Mack” in 1973 and on the mournful “Tell Me Why Has Our Love Turned Cold”.

ゲトー・ボーイズの「Mind Playing Tricks on Me」で、眠れない男の妄想を支えているのは、アイザック・ヘイズの静かなギターだ。ウィリー・ハッチの甘い声は、30年あまりのちに、UGK とアウトキャストの「Int'l Players Anthem」の芯になった。別の曲の物悲しい歌声は、メンフィスのスリー・6・マフィアが「Stay Fly」でループにしている。アトランタのオーガナイズド・ノイズは、ソウルの響きを、自分たちで弾いて持ち込んだ。
Isaac Hayes’ quiet guitar carries the sleepless paranoia of the Geto Boys’ “Mind Playing Tricks on Me”, the first big record to reach the whole country from Houston. More than 30 years later, Willie Hutch’s sweet voice became the heart of UGK and OutKast’s “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You)”, where André raps the opening verse alone before the drums arrive, over a beat by Memphis’ DJ Paul and Juicy J. Three 6 Mafia looped the mournful vocal from another Hutch song on “Stay Fly”. In Atlanta, Organized Noize played the soul themselves on “Player’s Ball”, a song first made for a Christmas compilation that became OutKast’s first single.
