レイジでいちばん耳に残るのは、左右いっぱいに広がる、短いシンセの旋律だ。ドラムは単純なまま、その旋律だけが何度も回る。音の出どころは、ヒップホップの外にある。
What sticks in your ear most in rage is a short synth line spread wide across left and right. The drums stay simple while that one line goes around and around, and the sound comes from outside hip-hop.

レイジのシンセは、短いフレーズを一つ決めたら、あとはそれだけで最後まで押し切る。1990年代の終わりのアリス・ディージェイのユーロダンスや、ダルードのトランスにも、2010年代のスクリレックスやグラスゴーのラスティーの EDM にも、同じ作り方がある。初期のレイジの作り手が手本にしたのは、とくに後者だった。
A rage synth picks one short phrase and rides it all the way to the end. The same method runs through Alice Deejay’s Eurodance and Darude’s trance from the late 1990s, and through the 2010s EDM of Skrillex and Glasgow’s Rustie. Early rage producers took their cue mostly from the latter.

Most of the beat on Usher’s “Love in This Club” is built from a GarageBand loop pack of synths. It was made by Atlanta’s Polow da Don, who spent the 2000s trying to bring European synths into R&B and hip-hop. Recording “Forever”, Chris Brown heard Polow’s sound as European, like techno or house. On Keri Hilson’s “Turnin’ Me On”, Polow teamed up with Danja to push synths and heavy bass to the front.

Pittsburgh’s Wiz Khalifa turned a Dutch Eurodance track into a club song wholesale on “Say Yeah” in 2008, and the producers around him even drew on video game music. Two years later “Black and Yellow” went to No. 1 in the US. Pi’erre Bourne and Philadelphia’s Lil Uzi Vert both name Wiz as one of their models. On Uzi’s first hit, “Money Longer”, Maaly Raw from the same city plays a winding melody.

「Miss the Rage」の勢いのあるループは、作り手が自分で弾いたものではなく、誰でも買えるサンプル・パックに入っていた音だった。同じ2021年、トリッピー・レッドは、レイジの曲ばかりを集めたアルバム『Trip at Knight』を出す。イートの「Get Busy」は鐘の音の暗いレイジで、TikTok から広まった。ケン・カーソンの「Rock N Roll」では、歪んだシンセの上で、声が短く刻まれる。
The driving loop on “Miss the Rage” came from a sample pack anyone could buy. That same year, 2021, Trippie Redd released “Trip at Knight”, an album made up entirely of rage songs. Yeat’s “Get Busy”, a dark rage track built on bells, spread from TikTok. On Ken Carson’s “Rock N Roll”, the vocals come in short, clipped bursts over distorted synths.
