In the spring of 2017, two songs spread online: Playboi Carti’s “Magnolia” and Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3”. Both stand just before rage.

「Magnolia」を作ったのは、サウスカロライナ州コロンビアで育ったピエール・ボーンだ。小学生のころから、おじのパソコンの FL Studio でビートを作っていた。重さを抜いた跳ねる 808 に、おもちゃのような小さな旋律を乗せる。翌年のプレイボーイ・カーティの『Die Lit』も、その多くを彼が手がけている。2019年の最初のスタジオ・アルバムでは、全曲のビートを自分で作り、自分でラップもした。
“Magnolia” was made by Pi’erre Bourne, who grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, and had been making beats in FL Studio on his uncle’s computer since elementary school. He sets small, toy-like melodies over 808s that bounce with the weight taken out. He also produced much of Playboi Carti’s “Die Lit” the following year, and on his first studio album in 2019 he made every beat and rapped on it himself.

リル・ウージー・ヴァートの「XO Tour Llif3」は、レーベルを通さずにネットへじかに上がった。ウージーの2015年のミックステープの題は、すでに『Luv Is Rage』だった。SoundCloud の世代は、割れた音で、強がらずに沈んだ気分を吐き出した。トリッピー・レッドがレイジの影響に挙げるのも、この世代の XXX テンタシオンだ。トリッピー自身の始まりも、オハイオ州コロンバスで一度で録り、2016年の11月に SoundCloud で出した「Love Scars」だった。
Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3” went straight online without passing through a label, and Uzi had already called his 2015 mixtape “Luv Is Rage”. The SoundCloud generation let out their low moods in a blown-out sound, with no front of toughness, and Trippie Redd names XXXTentacion from that generation as an influence on rage. Trippie’s own start was “Love Scars”, recorded in one take in Columbus, Ohio, and released on SoundCloud in November 2016.

プレイボーイ・カーティは2018年の『Die Lit』で土台を作り、2020年の『Whole Lotta Red』で形を決めた。そのまわりから、カーティのレーベル、オピウムのケン・カーソンとデストロイ・ロンリーや、昔のトラップやドリルの鐘の音を持ち込んだイートが出てくる。ドレイクまでが、この音で全米1位を取った。
Playboi Carti laid the groundwork with “Die Lit” in 2018 and set the shape with “Whole Lotta Red” in 2020. Around him came Ken Carson and Destroy Lonely from his label Opium, along with Yeat, who brought the bells of older trap and drill into rage. Drake’s “What’s Next”, whose beat was said to sound a lot like “Whole Lotta Red”, went to No. 1 in the US.
