Talk Box to Auto-Tune

Talk Box to Auto-Tune

A talk box pipes a keyboard’s sound into the player’s mouth, and the mouth shapes it into words for the microphone. It was the signature voice of Roger Troutman, leader of the Ohio band Zapp. West Coast rap brought it back in the 1990s, and in the 2000s singers found a similar sound in Auto-Tune, software made to correct pitch.

2Pac「I Get Around」は、ザップの「Computer Love」を下敷きにしている。

Ice Cube says he was introduced to hip-hop in the sixth grade, when a man who taught dance in an after-school program put on Zapp’s “More Bounce to the Ounce”. Years later he built “Friday” on that record. 2Pac’s “I Get Around” is laid over Zapp’s “Computer Love”. On “California Love”, Roger Troutman himself sings the hook through his talk box.

Southern Hip-Hop

T-Pain, from Tallahassee, Florida, was looking for a voice that sounded like no one else’s, and he sang with Auto-Tune turned up hard. One of his models was the sound Roger Troutman got from the talk box in the 1980s. His debut single was “I’m Sprung”, and “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’)”, with Yung Joc of Atlanta, went to No. 1. Snoop Dogg set out to sound like T-Pain on “Sexual Eruption”, over a beat by Shawty Redd of Atlanta.

Latin Trap

Ozuna, from Puerto Rico, sings “Si No Te Quiere” in a soft, Auto-Tuned voice. Latin trap vocals often move between rapping and singing through a processed voice like this. Bad Bunny, repeating the title “Chambea” (“get to work”), sings and raps in a low, slurred, conversational voice. In 2018 the remix of “Te Boté”, with both of them on it, became the first song with Latin trap elements to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.
