Funk, Turned Up
Funk, Turned Up
While New York producers were cutting jazz records into slices a few seconds long, the West Coast played 1970s and early-1980s funk at nearly full size, and often replayed it.
Funk
A talk-box line by Roger Troutman travels around the West Coast and comes back to him. His 1981 song “So Ruff, So Tuff”, written with his brother Larry, was remade the next year by Ronnie Hudson as “West Coast Poplock” and became a radio staple, and 14 years later Roger sang the line again himself as the hook of a song in praise of California. The low, heavy groove of James Brown’s “The Payback” would sound again in Compton more than 40 years after it was made.
Soul
In West Coast beats, sweet soul phrases loop at full length. The soft guitar of the Isley Brothers’ “Footsteps in the Dark” is one of them. The bass on Motown singer Dennis Edwards’ “Don’t Look Any Further” was famous from “Paid in Full” before 2Pac used it. Instead of lifting the bass or piano from the record, producers often replayed it, and the piano and horn riff of Joe Cocker’s “Woman to Woman” had already served as backing for breakdancers.
West Coast
By the mid-1990s, borrowed funk and soul had become the West Coast’s signature sound. Ice Cube walked into the studio with his own copy of the Isley Brothers record, and it keeps turning underneath “It Was a Good Day”. 2Pac’s first single after leaving prison, “California Love”, is built from Roger Troutman’s own voice and Joe Cocker’s piano, and on “Hit ‘Em Up” Johnny J replayed Dennis Edwards’ bass and drums. Twenty years later Kendrick Lamar, from Compton, played funk just as loud on “King Kunta”, with its fat, bouncing bass and the chant “We want the funk”.
