From Party to Street Story

In early-1980s Los Angeles, hip-hop was music for dancing. Within a few years it was telling the story of a day that starts with the police kicking in the door at six in the morning.

Uncle Jamm’s Army, the DJs who threw the parties, pressed their own 12-inch singles, “Dial-A-Freak” among them, and handed them out. Egyptian Lover sets a Middle Eastern synth scale against the 808 cowbell on “Egypt, Egypt”, and the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, heard on “Surgery”, included the young Dr. Dre and DJ Yella, who later joined N.W.A. Over bouncing 808 beats, rap was there to get people dancing, and the streets had not yet entered the lyrics. Ice-T’s voice first reached a wide audience on “Reckless”, an electro track in the 1984 film “Breakin’”.

イージー-E は、LL クール・J の「I Can't Live Without My Radio」の一節を、自分の曲「Radio」のサビに入れている。

The models for Los Angeles rap were on the East Coast. Ice-T has said he heard Schoolly D’s “P.S.K. What Does It Mean?” from Philadelphia in a club and used its delivery in his own songs. When they were starting out, N.W.A from Compton performed the Beastie Boys’ “Paul Revere” on stage with dirtier lyrics. Eazy-E put a line from LL Cool J’s “I Can’t Live Without My Radio” into the hook of his own track “Radio”.

In his Hollywood apartment, Ice-T built a bare-bones beat on a single TR-808 and wrote his first gangsta rap lyrics for “6 ‘N the Mornin’”. From the raid at six in the morning through running, fighting and getting caught, he tells the day in order and without emotion. Toddy Tee turned a police armored vehicle into a song on “Batterram”. Around the same time, up north in Oakland, Too Short kept talking about his city for more than nine minutes over a slow 808 on “Freaky Tales”.
