フライング・ロータスことスティーヴン・エリソンの祖母は、ダイアナ・ロスの「Love Hangover」を共作したマリリン・マクラウド。その妹が、ジャズのピアニストでハープ奏者のアリス・コルトレーンだった。
The grandmother of Steven Ellison, better known as Flying Lotus, was Marilyn McLeod, co-writer of Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover”. Her sister was the jazz pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane.

アリス・コルトレーンは、サックス奏者ジョン・コルトレーンの妻で、夫の死後も自分のアルバムを出し続けた。ニューヨーク州ディックス・ヒルズの自宅のスタジオで、インドの弦楽器タンプーラの持続音を敷き、その上にファラオ・サンダースのサックスと自分のハープを流す。フライング・ロータスの音楽にいちばん大きな影響を与えた人として、まず名前が挙がるのが彼女だ。
John Coltrane recorded the suite “A Love Supreme” in a single day, and after his death his wife, Alice Coltrane, kept releasing albums of her own. In her home studio in Dix Hills, New York, she laid down the drone of the tanpura, an Indian string instrument, and let Pharoah Sanders’ saxophone and her own harp flow over it. When people name the biggest influence on Flying Lotus’ music, hers is the first name they give.

ワープ・レコーズは、イングランド北部のシェフィールドのレコード店から始まった。はじめは、レゲエのような重い低音を鳴らす地元のテクノ「ブリープ」のレーベルで、スウィート・エクソシストが機械の試験音で遊び、リーズの LFO やナイトメアズ・オン・ワックスがここからレコードを出した。1992年のコンピレーション『Artificial Intelligence』で、踊るためではなく家で聴くための電子音楽を打ち出し、のちにボーズ・オブ・カナダのアルバムも出す。フライング・ロータスが2007年に契約したのは、このレーベルだった。
Warp Records started in a record shop in Sheffield, in the north of England. At first it was a label for bleep, a local strain of techno with reggae-weight bass, putting out Sweet Exorcist’s games with machine test tones as well as records by LFO and Nightmares on Wax from Leeds. With the 1992 compilation “Artificial Intelligence” it pushed electronic music for listening at home rather than dancing, and it later released Boards of Canada’s albums. In 2007 Flying Lotus signed to Warp.

フライング・ロータスは、J・ディラのいたストーンズ・スロウでインターンをしながら、自分のビートを作っていた。ワープから出したアルバムでは、ラップのないビートに、電子音と、大おばのアリス・コルトレーンから続くジャズが混ざっていく。2010年の『Cosmogramma』では、アリスの息子のラヴィ・コルトレーンがテナー・サックスを吹いた。
Flying Lotus was making his own beats while interning at Stones Throw, J Dilla’s label. On the albums he put out through Warp, his rapless beats blend electronic sound with jazz that runs back to his great-aunt, Alice Coltrane. One of them takes its title straight from the city he was born in, “Los Angeles”. On “Cosmogramma” in 2010, Alice’s son Ravi Coltrane played tenor saxophone.
