The Instrumentals Tapes
In high school in Nutley, New Jersey, Michael Volpe started making beats while fooling around on a keyboard. As Clams Casino, he would go on to send those beats to rappers over the internet.

Nujabes made “Aruarian Dance” in 2004 for the anime “Samurai Champloo”, speeding up Laurindo Almeida’s Latin jazz guitar into a loop and laying soft drums under it, with no rap at all. “Reflection Eternal”, a year later, moves on nothing but a wistful, repeating jazz piano. J Dilla called “Donuts” music a little too much for an MC to handle, though Ghostface Killah later rapped over one of its tracks, “One for Ghost”.

Clams Casino took beats he had made for rappers, stripped off the voices and, in March 2011, gathered them on a single tape called “Instrumentals”, free on his own website. The hazy sound meant to sit behind someone else’s song became something to hear by itself. Lil B in California had rapped over these beats, including “I’m God”, whose Imogen Heap vocal was cleared only eleven years after Lil B used it, and A$AP Rocky in New York recorded over them too.

Mac Miller of Pittsburgh handed Clams Casino two tracks on his first album in 2011, less than a year after the beat tape went out, and came back two years later for “Bird Call”, carrying the hazy sound well outside cloud rap. JJ DOOM, MF DOOM’s duo with Jneiro Jarel, also released “Bookfiend” in a Clams Casino version.

Vince Staples of Long Beach gave three tracks on his 2015 debut, a double album, to Clams Casino. The title, “Summertime ’06”, points to the summer of 2006 in his part of town. “Norf Norf”, one of those three, became the album’s last single. The title track is built on Darwin’s Theory’s “I Hope You’ll Be”, and Kilo Kish shares the vocal on “Surf”.

In 2018, about ten years after Clams Casino started sending out beats, his name appeared in a song title beside a singer who had also come up online. Lil Peep had become known in 2015, when “Star Shopping” spread on SoundCloud. Only one album came out in his lifetime, and he died three months after it at 21; “Awful Things”, from that album, first reached the US charts after he was gone. The single carrying both names, “4 Gold Chains”, came out half a year after his death.
