As a high school student in California, Josh Davis, later DJ Shadow, tried making tracks from nothing but samples on a four-track tape recorder. His model was a 1988 Public Enemy album.

Public Enemy’s second album, “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back”, stacks fragments of dozens of records into a wall of sound that blares like an alarm. Its sources run past old funk into free jazz and plain noise, and on “Bring the Noise” the stretch where only the kick plays is a sampler mistake left in. DJ Shadow first took the idea of building tracks from samples alone from this record, where “Security of the First World” already runs with no rap at all.

In the early 1990s, many New York beats were made on the E-mu SP-1200, Gang Starr’s “Take It Personal” among them. Pete Rock used the machine’s filter to muffle his basslines, and A Tribe Called Quest’s “Midnight Marauders” is counted among the best records made on it. DJ Shadow, though, took DJ Stretch Armstrong’s advice in 1992 and chose Akai’s MPC60. By then the SP-1200 had been out for four years and its sound had limits, he said.

DJ Shadow’s records began at KDVS, the radio station at the University of California, Davis. His broadcasts there got him noticed and led him into making tracks, and he signed to Mo’ Wax, the British label run by James Lavelle. He mixed hip-hop, funk, jazz and rock from records pulled out of used bins, and a writer at the London magazine Mixmag called the sound trip-hop, a word that came out of his first Mo’ Wax single, “In/Flux”.
