The Quiet Bars
In the 1990s, New York producers reached for jazz records. A soft, slightly wistful sound began to settle on top of funk’s hard drums.
Jazz
From jazz records, producers took not the drums but a few bars of the sax or piano above them. They went for the way into a tune, or a part turning quietly behind the bass, rather than the showpiece solo. On Ronnie Foster’s “Mystic Brew”, that means the first few seconds before the drums come in. Tom Scott’s unhurried sax on “Today” and Donald Byrd’s electric piano on “Think Twice” are passages of the same kind, only a few seconds long.

Pete Rock used Tom Scott’s sax in 1992 for a song dedicated to his late friend Trouble T Roy of Heavy D & the Boyz. He fell for the beautiful bassline first, Pete Rock recalled, and only then found the sax. The piano from “Think Twice” became the loop of Main Source’s “Looking at the Front Door”, and the opening of “Mystic Brew” turns under A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation”.
