The Sampler Era
The Sampler Era
In the mid-1980s, a machine called the sampler changed the way hip-hop was made. It could cut a split second of sound from a record, assign it to a pad and play it back in any order. The first thing producers went after was funk drums.
Funk
ボビー・バードの「I Know You Got Soul」からは、エリック・B.
Producers hunted for the few bars where the band stops and only the drums are left. Clyde Stubblefield played eight of them on “Funky Drummer” after James Brown told him to skip the solo and just keep the beat. Melvin Bliss had two at the top of a B-side that never sold, and the Soul Searchers had their own. Dug up one by one, they became the base of hundreds of hip-hop songs, and Eric B. & Rakim even took the title of Bobby Byrd’s “I Know You Got Soul”.
Golden Age
Marley Marl noticed that a snare had slipped into a sound he had cut from a record. That meant the drums from any record he loved could go straight into his own beats. E-mu’s SP-1200, released in 1987, could hold only 10 seconds of sound, and its grainy tone became the sound of the era. The Soul Searchers’ drums went into Eric B. & Rakim’s “Paid in Full”, and the Melvin Bliss drums into “Ego Trippin’” by Ultramagnetic MC’s.
Boom Bap
The hard drums built on samplers were refined in 1990s New York. DJ Premier of Gang Starr slowed about two seconds of jazz guitar into a deliberately goofy melody, like music in an elevator, and Guru raps over it in a low, unforced voice. In a beat Premier made for Jeru the Damaja, a sound other than the drums became the core. On A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario”, the mic passes to Leaders of the New School, and Busta Rhymes barks his way through the end.
