DJ Krush's Meiso

Tokyo’s DJ Krush started DJing after seeing the film “Wild Style” in 1983. On his 1995 album “Meiso”, he brought American rappers onto his own beats. This episode follows those voices back to where they were heard before.

Boom Bap

刑務所に入っていたシャグが、出てから初めて声を入れたのが、1994年の『Hard to Earn』の「F.A.L.A.」だ。

Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth met at high school in Mount Vernon, New York. Pete Rock dug into obscure soul and jazz records and often built his hooks around horns, while C.L. Smooth rapped with hardly any profanity. Gang Starr started out as a group Guru formed with his friend Big Shug. Shug had been in prison, and his first appearance on a Gang Starr album after his release was “F.A.L.A.”, on “Hard to Earn” in 1994.

Jazz Rap

1995年の『Do You Want More?!!!??!』

Guru’s 1993 solo album “Jazzmatazz” was recorded with a live jazz band, and it sold better in Europe, where jazz had a bigger audience, than in America. The Roots couldn’t break through at home in Philadelphia, so they moved to London for a while, released their first album there and found a devoted following in Europe. On “Do You Want More?!!!??!” in 1995, Black Thought and Malik B. rap over a band that leans on Rhodes piano.

Trip-Hop

「Only the Strong Survive」では C.L.

DJ Krush’s “Meiso” lays pieces of jazz and funk over unhurried breaks. C.L. Smooth raps on “Only the Strong Survive”, Black Thought and Malik B. of the Roots on the title track “Meiso”, and Guru and Big Shug on “Most Wanted Man”. Krush doesn’t like to tie his music to any one genre, but the album is counted among the best trip-hop records.
