Stacking Rhymes
Stacking Rhymes
New York rappers of the 1990s packed several rhymes and metaphors into a single line. That way of writing had models from ten years earlier.

The forms of verbal craft took shape in the late 1980s, each rapper with a style of his own. Rakim, in a relaxed low voice, placed rhymes in the middle of lines as well as at the end. KRS-One of Boogie Down Productions beat opponents with words, and Slick Rick played several characters by himself. Kool G Rap from Queens, above all, described the dark side of the streets in fine detail and crammed as many multisyllable rhymes into a line as he could. His way of writing became the template for the Queens rappers who came after.

ナズは「N.Y. State of Mind」のいちばんの手本に、クール・G・ラップの「Streets of New York」を挙げている。
Nas has named Kool G Rap’s “Streets of New York” as the main model for “N.Y. State of Mind”. In 1994 Nas took that way of writing, with its close detail of dark streets and lines packed with rhyme, and made it one notch denser. The next year G Rap brought Nas onto a track of his own, putting the model and the one who learned from it on the same song. G Rap’s street stories became a template for another Queens act as well, Mobb Deep.
