Out of New York
The first hip-hop records were made and sold by small companies in and around New York. Those records reached young people in other cities, who remade them in the language of their own streets.
East Coast
On “The Breaks” in 1980, Harlem’s Kurtis Blow played on two meanings of the title: the break in a song and a turn of fortune in life. It came out just as New York rap singles were starting to sell across the country. When Run, who had been Blow’s DJ, recut “Hard Times”, a funk track from the same album, with Run-DMC, the backing shrank to a drum machine and a single keyboard note. Run-DMC’s first album became the first rap album to go gold, and Ice-T in Los Angeles later said it meant anyone could make an album.
Southern Hip-Hop
Sugar Hill Records in New Jersey released “Funk You Up” by the Sequence, three women from South Carolina, in 1979. It is regarded as the first notable rap recording by Southerners. Twelve years passed before the South reached the whole country with a sound of its own, when Houston’s Geto Boys put out “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” on the local Rap-A-Lot label. Two years after that, OutKast from Atlanta released “Player’s Ball” over live bass and organ played by Organized Noize.
Gangsta Rap
Just south of New York, in Philadelphia, Schoolly D put out “P.S.K. What Does It Mean?” himself in 1985, naming it after a local gang. It is almost nothing but a drum machine and deep reverb, and it helped set gangsta rap going on the West Coast. Ice Cube, who was given the first verse on N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton”, left the group, moved to New York and made “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” with Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad.
West Coast
Ice-T in Los Angeles modeled his delivery on Schoolly D’s low voice and began rapping about gang life in his own city, starting with “6 ‘N the Mornin’” in 1986. “Colors”, the title song he made for the film, was his first record to enter the national chart, and a sociologist who studies gangs later called it the best sociological writing on gangs. Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day” goes the other way, describing a day when nobody got shot and the police never stopped him.
Memphis Rap
In Memphis, hip-hop spread outside the record business. The homemade tapes DJ Spanish Fly made from the late 1980s, “Gangsta Walk” among them, passed from hand to hand, and the young producers of the 1990s grew up on them. DJ Paul handed out his own tapes at school and in 1991 formed Three 6 Mafia with Juicy J and others. On Gangsta Boo’s “Where Dem Dollas At”, produced by the two of them, the title line repeats over and over like a chant. “Stay Fly” reached No. 13 in the US in 2005, the group’s biggest hit.
Reggaeton
Vico C, born in New York and raised in Puerto Rico, rapped almost entirely in Spanish, dropping in an English phrase only now and then. He started out selling tapes he recorded himself, his lyrics became known across the island, and “La Recta Final” with DJ Negro was the title track of an album that made the charts. Daddy Yankee, who first copied Vico C’s delivery, had his first hit, “Yamilette”, on DJ Playero’s tape “Playero 37”. In 2004 “Gasolina” became the first reggaeton song to enter the US top 40.
Hip-Hop Soul
Over New York hip-hop beats, Mary J. Blige of Yonkers sang out in a voice raised in church. The executive producer of the album with her first single, “You Remind Me”, was Sean Combs, who started Bad Boy the following year, and on “Real Love” she belts over the hard drums of Audio Two’s “Top Billin’”. Rap drums went straight under an R&B singer. Faith Evans, who was at Bad Boy and lent her voice and lyrics to Mary’s next album, wrote and sang “Soon as I Get Home” herself.
Brooklyn Drill
Brooklyn’s own drill had been audible since Bobby Shmurda’s hit in 2014. In 2019 Pop Smoke, from Canarsie, barked in a thick, rasping low voice over beats by London’s 808Melo on “Welcome To The Party” and “Dior”, and carried the sound beyond New York. The same year Fivio Foreign from East Flatbush made his name with “Big Drip”, which drew a remix with Lil Baby and Quavo from Atlanta.
