三人組の U.T.F.O.

In 1984, outside the Queensbridge projects, 14-year-old Lolita Shanté Gooden, later Roxanne Shanté, overheard the radio DJ Mr. Magic and the producer Marley Marl talking. The trio U.T.F.O. had failed to show up for a show the two had organized. She offered to record a revenge song.

U.T.F.O.’s “Roxanne, Roxanne” started life as the B-side of “Hanging Out”, a 1984 single that didn’t sell. The Brooklyn trio take turns describing a woman named Roxanne who ignores their advances, and radio began playing the B-side instead. After 14-year-old Roxanne Shanté answered them, the trio and their producers Full Force put out “The Real Roxanne”, fronted by a woman claiming to be Roxanne herself. On the follow-up, “Calling Her a Crab”, they compare Shanté to a monkey and a crab.

Roxanne Shanté recorded “Roxanne’s Revenge” at Marley Marl’s place as a seven-minute improvisation in a single take. It sold more than 250,000 copies in New York alone, and at least 30 answer records followed. Even so, at a 1985 freestyle battle the judge, Kurtis Blow, withheld his vote from her because she was a girl, as he later admitted to her. The song itself was reissued that year with new music and new words. In 1988 MC Lyte of Brooklyn became the first female rapper to release a solo album, with “Paper Thin”, a song with no hook, and “I Cram to Understand U”, which she wrote at 12.

Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It” began as a B-side. A remix by the San Francisco DJ Cameron Paul got on the radio, and early in 1988 it climbed to No. 19 in the US. “Let’s Talk About Sex”, written by their producer Hurby Azor, speaks openly about safe sex and became the first American hip-hop song to reach No. 1 in Germany. Salt and Pepa wrote “Shoop” themselves and, overriding a label uneasy that Hurby wasn’t involved, made it the album’s first single.

ラティファは「U.N.I.T.Y.」

Queen Latifah released her first album at 19, and on “Ladies First” she teamed up with Monie Love from Britain. It is said to be the first song pairing two female rappers who were not in the same group. On her own album the next year, Monie Love sang “It’s a Shame (My Sister)” over a song Stevie Wonder wrote for the Spinners. On “U.N.I.T.Y.” Latifah talks back to street harassment, violence and the slurs aimed at women within hip-hop, and the song won her a Grammy.

アルバム『The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill』の「Ex-Factor」では、ウータン・クランの「Can It Be All So Simple」を弾き直した上で、壊れていく恋を歌う。

Lauryn Hill of the Fugees went solo with “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998, and it entered the US chart at No. 1, the first No. 1 by a female rapper. On “Ex-Factor”, from “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, she sings about a relationship coming apart over a replayed version of Wu-Tang Clan’s “Can It Be All So Simple”. The piano on “Everything Is Everything” was played by John Legend, then 19.
