New York's Record Shelf, 1994
Nas and the Notorious B.I.G. both released their first albums in 1994. Dig under those beats and you find the old jazz and R&B records the producers chose.
Jazz
The jazz under mid-1990s New York beats comes from its quiet moments, a few seconds where a piano or an organ plays softly. Pete Rock cut just six notes from Ahmad Jamal’s 1970 recording of “I Love Music” and repeated them over and over. Reuben Wilson’s Hammond organ on “We’re In Love” and the drifting keyboard of Lonnie Liston Smith’s “A Garden of Peace” became loops of a few seconds in the same way. Played again and again, those seconds start to sound dark and low, and the rappers spoke over them.
R&BR&B
R&B hits from 1980s radio went under New York beats in the 1990s. The Notorious B.I.G. in particular used the sweet synth tracks of Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” and the Isley Brothers’ “Between the Sheets” almost as they were, and over them a story about a poor childhood plays as a song about making it. Nas laid the Gap Band’s 1980 song “Yearning for Your Love” under “Life’s a Bitch”.
East Coast
The albums of Nas, the Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z share one thing: a few seconds of an old record, looped with almost no change. With the beat standing still, the ear goes to the words. Nas takes his time drawing the city on “The World Is Yours” and looks back on “Memory Lane”, Biggie remembers being poor on “Juicy”, and on “Dead Presidents” Jay-Z describes the dealer’s world in a calm, even voice.
