Sylvia of Sugar Hill

Sylvia of Sugar Hill

Sugar Hill Records, the label that put out “Rapper’s Delight” in 1979, was started by Sylvia Robinson and her husband Joe, and named after Sugar Hill, a neighborhood in Harlem, where she was born. For more than twenty years before that, Sylvia had been making R&B and soul records.

Sylvia was learning guitar from Mickey Baker when the two started singing together. Their “Love Is Strange” went to No. 1 on the R&B chart in 1957. After that she also took on work that never carried her name. She produced Joe Jones’ “You Talk Too Much”, and on Ike & Tina Turner’s “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine”, by her own account, she paid for the session, taught Tina the song and played the guitar herself.

Soul

「Look at Me (I'm in Love)」は、メンバーの二人と、専属のバンドを率いるギタリストが書いた。

The Robinsons moved to New Jersey in 1966 and started a soul label, All Platinum, the following year. The Moments signed on and had a hit almost at once with “Not on the Outside”. “Love on a Two-Way Street”, which Sylvia wrote with Bert Keyes, was album filler until the couple put it out as a single, and it spent five weeks at No. 1 on the soul chart. “Look at Me (I’m in Love)” was written by two of the Moments with the guitarist who led the label’s house band.

At Sugar Hill, Sylvia kept the songwriting and the playing in-house. Doug Wimbish, the bassist in the house band, had come over from All Platinum. The Sugarhill Gang’s “8th Wonder” and their “Apache” were written by Cheryl the Pearl of the Sequence, another act on the label. On “The Message” almost all the rapping is Melle Mel’s, and Sylvia finished the record by adding a rhyme Mel had used on an earlier song.

East Coast

Z「Empire State of Mind」で最後まで鳴るピアノは、モーメンツの「Love on a Two-Way Street」から取られている。

What Sylvia left behind kept turning up in East Coast hip-hop after Sugar Hill folded in 1985. Bon Ami, the label she started in 1987, signed a trio from East Orange who later broke through as Naughty by Nature with “O.P.P.”. Busta Rhymes had a beat he could not write to for seven months, until a line from “8th Wonder” gave him the chorus of “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check”. The piano that runs all the way through Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” comes from the Moments’ “Love on a Two-Way Street”.
