The 808
The 808
Roland’s TR-808 is a drum machine released in 1980. People said it didn’t sound like real drums, sales stalled, and production ended in 1983. Yet the machine’s long, low-ringing kick would go on to remake the bass of hip-hop.
Electronic
Even before the 808 came out, some musicians were building rhythm entirely from electronic sound: Kraftwerk in Düsseldorf and Yellow Magic Orchestra in Tokyo. YMO borrowed a TR-808 from Roland ahead of its release and played it on stage at the Budokan in 1980. At parties in the Bronx these cold machine records were played for dancing, Kraftwerk’s “Numbers” and “Trans-Europe Express” among them, and YMO’s “Computer Game” later went into Afrika Bambaataa’s 1983 “Death Mix”.
Electro
Arthur Baker and his collaborators replayed Kraftwerk’s rhythm and melody on a TR-808 for “Planet Rock” in 1982. Instead of stringing together breaks from records, they built the beat from scratch on a machine. Cybotron in Detroit and Egyptian Lover in Los Angeles made electro the same way. Dry handclaps and a long, stretched kick reached hip-hop ears here for the first time.
Miami Bass
MC A.D.E. (There It Is)」で全米のヒットになった。
Miami stretched the 808 kick out until the bass shook car speakers. MC A.D.E.’s “Bass Rock Express” became the first hit, and the 808 began to carry the bassline rather than only keep time. Paired with a short shouted hook, that low end became a national hit with “Whoomp! (There It Is)” by Tag Team from Atlanta. In the same year, 1993, 95 South released a song with a very similar title and said Tag Team had stolen it.
Bounce
New Orleans parties ran on records built over the “Drag Rap” beat, such as DJ Jubilee’s “Get Ready, Ready!”. Mannie Fresh, the producer at Cash Money, chopped the 808 hi-hats fast and fine and pushed them to the front of the beat. He produced a whole Hot Boys album, put bouncing 808s under Juvenile’s songs and released a single of his own, carrying the city’s party bounce across the country. The busy hi-hats of trap trace back in part to this sound.
クランクCrunk
Crunk took the sound of Southern clubs straight up the national charts. On his own records and on the beats he made for the Ying Yang Twins and Petey Pablo, Lil Jon ran the heavy 808 he inherited from Miami bass under chants that come out as shouts. “Get Low” climbed to No. 2 in the US the year after its album came out.
Trap
In Lex Luger’s beats, the 808 has pitch and plays the song’s bassline. Waka Flocka Flame shouts over one on “Hard in da Paint”, which opens on a low wall of brass, and Rick Ross raps “B.M.F.” over another. On Juicy J’s “Bandz a Make Her Dance”, Mike Will Made-It’s beat carries a cut-up sample of Juicy J’s own voice from his Three 6 Mafia days.
