The Beat Leaves Rap

Trap beats worked their way into music outside rap. They mixed with Spanish-language song in Puerto Rico, with country in rural America, and with the sound of Memphis tapes on the internet.

On Migos’ “Versace”, the three trade tightly chopped words over a sparse Zaytoven beat. Fetty Wap of New Jersey found a beat that a Belarusian producer was giving away free on his website, sang for the first time on it, and put “Trap Queen” on SoundCloud; the song climbed to No. 2 in the US. Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” rode the Mannequin Challenge video craze and gave the duo and Gucci Mane their first No. 1.

Around 2014, rappers in Puerto Rico began putting Spanish-language rap over trap beats and posting it online. Bad Bunny, uploading songs to SoundCloud while working at a supermarket, was one of them. Cardi B’s “I Like It”, on which he appears, became the first Latin trap song to reach No. 1 in the US, in 2018.
カントリー・ラップCountry Rap

Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” laid a banjo over a trap beat and sang about cowboys. The remix with Billy Ray Cyrus held No. 1 for 19 weeks, breaking the previous record. Country and rap had been edging closer for some time: in 2010 Jason Aldean was already rapping a verse, and Colt Ford reached No. 1 on both the country and the rap album charts.

The sound of 1990s Memphis tapes was dug up online in the 2010s and named phonk, and SpaceGhostPurrp of Miami put that name on his first album. Freddie Dredd’s “Cha Cha” spread online with its Memphis-style repeated vocal and cowbell intact. In the 2020s, fast cowbell beats like DVRST’s “Close Eyes” went around the world on car drifting videos.
