Drill Goes Global

Drill Goes Global

In 2012, on Chicago’s South Side, the teenage Chief Keef and the producer Young Chop made trap even darker and colder. Called drill locally, the sound crossed the Atlantic within a few years, changed shape in London, and eventually reached New York.

Drumma Boy, whom Young Chop names as a forerunner of drill, is the son of a clarinetist in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. He made the beat for Young Jeezy’s “Put On” in 2008, and two years later produced Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands”, which became Waka’s highest-charting single. Most of that album, “Flockaveli”, was made by Lex Luger, who also did “Grove St. Party”. The young rappers who first started drill in Chicago took Waka as one of their main models.

Chief Keef’s voice keeps its feelings in check and repeats short phrases. He was 17 and under house arrest at his grandmother’s when “I Don’t Like” came out. Young Chop’s beats kept trap’s 808 and stripped away the flash. Keef, Lil Durk and the other young Chicago rappers spread their songs through YouTube before any label got involved.

UKドリルUK Drill

From around 2012, young people in Brixton, south London, took up Chicago drill. The 808 bass began sliding its pitch up and down, and the hi-hats skipped even more finely. Headie One and Dave keep their voices low over a dark piano. Out of voices that carried their district’s name, as Unknown T does on “Homerton B”, came Russ Millions and Tion Wayne’s “Body”, UK drill’s first No. 1 in Britain.

Brooklyn Drill

Pop Smoke of Brooklyn rapped over beats by the London producer 808Melo in 2019. Drill, born in Chicago and turned into a sound of sliding bass in London, had reached New York over the internet. That sliding bass suited both Pop Smoke’s deep, heavy voice and the shouted ad-libs of Fivio Foreign from East Flatbush. Three years earlier, in 2016, 22Gz’s “Suburban” had already caught on with cold synths and a heavy 808.
